The carved wooden interior and forked staircase of Livraria Lello

Bookshop

Livraria Lello

With its carved wooden interior, stained-glass skylight and forked red staircase, Livraria Lello is one of the most beautiful bookshops in the world, and one of the busiest.

Why visit

Livraria Lello opened in 1906 in a building with a neo-Gothic façade. Inside, almost every surface is carved or painted wood, lit by a stained-glass skylight, and a sweeping staircase forks up to the gallery. Its popularity soared with Harry Potter fans, and it now welcomes huge numbers of visitors.

Tickets

Entry is by timed ticket, which you can book online. The ticket price has often been redeemable against a book purchase in the shop; check the current terms when you book.

Tips

  • Book the first slot of the day for the best chance of photos without crowds.
  • The shop is small, so visits can feel rushed at busy times. Take a moment on the gallery to look down at the staircase.
  • Combine your visit with Clérigos Tower, just around the corner.
