Planning
Built on steep hills above the Douro, Porto is full of viewpoints, known in Portuguese as miradouros. Most are free, and many are best at sunset.
A small park on the Gaia side of the Dom Luís I Bridge, with a classic view of Ribeira across the river. It is the city’s favourite sunset spot, so arrive early on summer evenings.
Just above Jardim do Morro, the terrace in front of the round church of the Serra do Pilar monastery looks straight across to the old town and down onto the bridge.

Walk across the upper deck for views up and down the river, with Ribeira on one side and the Gaia port lodges on the other.
A quiet terrace in the old Jewish quarter, with a wide view over the rooftops to the cathedral, the river and Gaia. Good in the morning light.
The square in front of Porto Cathedral looks out over the tumbling roofs of the old town. Combine it with a visit to the cathedral cloister.
For a 360-degree view from the city centre, climb the more than 200 steps of Clérigos Tower. Unlike the other viewpoints, it needs a ticket.
A sloping garden west of the centre, popular with locals for sunset drinks on the grass above the river.
