Douro Valley day trip from Porto: tour, train or cruise?

  • 2 min read

Upriver from Porto, the Douro cuts through steep hills lined with terraced vineyards. This is where the grapes for port are grown, and the Alto Douro Wine Region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is the most rewarding day trip from Porto, and there are three main ways to do it.

1. A guided wine tour

The most popular option. A small-group minivan tour picks you up in Porto, visits two wine estates, called quintas, for tastings, and includes lunch. Many add a short boat trip on the river at Pinhão.

  • Time: a full day, usually around 9 to 10 hours
  • Best for: wine lovers and anyone who wants tastings without driving

2. The scenic train

The Douro line runs from Porto to Peso da Régua and Pinhão, and beyond Régua the track follows the river closely, with superb views. It is cheap and relaxing, but you will need to arrange quinta visits yourself.

  • Time: roughly two to three hours each way
  • Best for: independent travellers and train fans

3. A river cruise

Day cruises sail upriver from Porto towards Régua, passing through locks in the river’s dams, with the return by train or coach. It is the most scenic way to arrive, but a long day.

When to go

September and early October, the harvest season, are the most atmospheric months, and the busiest. Spring is green and quiet. In midsummer the valley can be very hot, much hotter than Porto, so bring a hat and water.

Driving yourself

Hiring a car gives you the most freedom, but the roads are narrow and winding, and you will be tasting wine. Most visitors find a guided tour more relaxing.
