Getting there

Getting to Porto, and getting around

Porto’s airport is linked to the centre by metro, and trains connect the city with Lisbon and northern Spain. Once you arrive, the metro, trams and your own feet do the rest.

By air

Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) is about 11 kilometres north-west of the centre. It has direct flights from across Europe and some longer-haul routes.

By bus and car

Long-distance buses link Porto with Lisbon, other Portuguese cities and Spain. Driving is easy on the motorways, but parking in the centre is difficult and expensive, and many motorways have tolls.

Getting around Porto

  • Metro: six lines cover the city, the airport and Gaia. Pay with a rechargeable Andante card.
  • Buses: run by STCP, they reach areas the metro does not, including Foz.
  • Historic trams: line 1 runs along the river from near Ribeira to Foz do Douro.
  • Funicular: the Guindais funicular climbs from Ribeira to Batalha in a couple of minutes.
  • Cable car: the Gaia cable car runs from the Gaia riverside up towards Jardim do Morro.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing: plentiful and good value for short hops up the hills.

The Porto Card, a tourist pass sold for one to four days, offers discounts on sights and is available with or without public transport.
